The Switch advances marine electrical drive trains
The Switch

In September 2016, The Switch acquired Wärtsilä’s marine drives business encompassing megawatt- class power drives.

The Yaskawa-backed investment includes the products, R&D and manufacturing, enabling The Switch to gain a stronger machine and drive package, offering broader product range and wider market access.

This investment in the marine drives business allows the company to focus on developing its core competences and creating drive train solutions with better synergy. The Switch aims to enhance its offering of world-class products since Wärtsilä’s drive offering is optimized for marine applications. Additionally, it can broaden its marine business, an area which is taking off with the growing acceptance of the company’s permanent magnet technology.

The specialized marine R&D teams within the group will collaborate closely, enabling The Switch and Yaskawa to bring additional technical resources to ongoing and future marine solutions.

The power drive products already used as proven elements within Wärtsilä’s systems have passed various approval requirements and are used in applications ranging from propulsion to drilling. Currently, hundreds of ships are sailing with these rugged drives, making them attractive to other marine customers who are seeking to reduce risk while upgrading to more advanced drive train solutions and hybrid systems.

The 690 low-voltage drives range extends from 500 kW–5.5 MW single motors and 10 MW dual motors; and 6.6 kV high-voltage drives from 5 MW–24 MW.
